A battery backup pump, while the most inexpensive initially
requires some maintenance to make sure it will work. These units should be inspected twice per
year, and batteries will need to be replaced every 3-5 years. The electric motor can become inoperable from
non-use. And an important consideration
is the pump will only run as long as you have battery power – typically 4 to 7 hours on a brand new battery.
A Water Commander™ backup pump requires no power to operate – it runs off of
your city water pressure. These units
cost a little more but provide the benefit of no maintenance, no battery
replacements, no moving parts, and a higher pumping capacity than battery
operated pumps. You should still get
these pumps tested annually to give yourself peace of mind.
The most expensive option would be to have a standbygenerator provide power to your sump pump.
While it is more expensive, it also does more than just work your sump
pump – your standby generator could also provide power to either just critical
circuits in your house such as refrigerators, heating and cooking appliances,
and some lighting – or could provide full backup for your entire house.
